Actually, it all started in 1999 when I had hired my first team member. The first hire, I was lucky, she was great. After that, experienced a number of difficult, painful years with people that I hired that were not a good fit for our team. Not their fault. It was MY fault for not having a better system in place to hire the RIGHT team member.
The good news? Those days are gone forever. We have a system, we have parted ways with everyone who does not want to be a part of our team, and most days are really good days. While we are at it, let’s be honest, the days that are not so good, we are able to be completely candid with each other, resolve and move forward. No hidden agendas. I like that!

One of the most meaningful authors I have ever studied is Earl Nightengale (The Strangest Secret and many more). The greatest gift received from Nightengale was the added “mindset shift”.
One of many meaningful Nightengale messages- “People who get on in this world are those who look for circumstances they want and if they can’t find them, make them.” What are you doing to control your future?
What is a mindset?
From Wikipedia (condensed): “A set of assumptions, methods or notations which is so established that it creates a powerful incentive to adopt or accept prior behaviors, choices, or tools. And it is often difficult to counteract its effects upon analysis and decision making processes.”
Wow. I think we can agree our mindset can be a formidable friend … or foe!
If our fixed assumptions lead us toward the achievement of productive goals then our mindset is a friend, indeed.
However, all too often our mindset keeps us trapped.
And, by definition, we’re likely not even aware that we’re being held back by the hidden forces of our mindset!
For example, most agency owners have a “fire-killing mindset.”
This mindset is adopted by every team member ever hired and becomes the agency’s culture. And the mantra becomes “that’s just the way things are.”
And we wonder where all the chaos comes from!
The great news is you CAN change your mindset.
• You can keep the parts that will continue to take you toward your goals.
• You can drop those parts that are holding you back.
• And you can add new, productive ideas to your mindset.
And that’s exactly what you must do if you are to be successful at leading your agency and realizing your personal freedom.
Sure, you can enjoy limited success for a short time without a change in mindset. You can force some new ideas and tools into place and realize their benefits.
But without the necessary shift in mindset old behaviors, old choices and old tools will overrun your agency once again, plunging it back into chaos.
That’s just what a mindset does, that’s what a culture does.

** Many of my conversations with agents this week surrounded FULLY EXPLOITING all of your programs, whether it is agency team motivation, marketing or anything else. Are you? Do you have the right systems in place to do so? If you try a new program and it does not work right away, do you just let it die? Personally, I have people that hold me accountable to make sure this does not happen. If you recall our top 10 reasons to keep in touch from a few weeks ago, reason #7 was it takes 4-7 touches before a person will raise their hand and buy or respond to you. Never, ever give up!
** We are blowing away our sales goals this month in our agency. IMHO ( in my humble opinion), this is in part due to the new direct mail and email campaign we put in place for 2010 for OUR AGENCY TEAM MEMBERS. That’s right, we email and direct mail our team members at their homes to remind and motivate them of our goals, which they are, obligated to step up or get out. Unfortunately, an appointment yesterday resulted in discovery that the prospect had been WITHOUT workers comp for almost one year. The incumbent agent was asleep at the wheel (by the way, we have direct mail and other pieces that focus on this very area, ask me about it). Results-$2,850 in commission. Source – a referral.
** Met with an agent yesterday that is fairly new in business, has managed to accumulate about 1,000 policies, but cannot figure out how he is going to grow his agency, has questions about hiring, operational matters that need fixing. In his own words “I simply need someone with proven results to coach me in the right direction”. I was super excited to let Dave know we will help him.
